Kauai Photography: Tips for Wearing Your Hair at a Kauai Family Photo Shoot

As a professional photographer, I am frequently asked by women how they can look better in their photos. However having Kauai family photos done outside at a beach is a whole different thing to having them done inside in a portrait studio. You have to take into account the wind, the sun and other factors.

Kauai can be windy, especially at the beach. You can wear you hair down on calm days, as the young lady did in the picture to the left, and it will look fine. As a photographer I often position my clients facing into the wind so it can blow their hair out of their faces and behind them. If you know in advance it's going to be windy, however, I advise putting it up in a nice style or wearing hair clips to ensure it doesn't get in your face.

Here are 4 important tips:

  1. Choose an updo with a beachy or relaxed look. Do not pick a perfectly polished hairstyle that will look obvious if it is blows out of place.
  2. Choose hair styles that are likely to stay in place easily. Braids or twists (full or on the side) work well.
  3. Show your hair stylist or cosmetologist a photo. This works better than explaining it to your stylist in words or letting them come up with a style all by themselves.
  4. Consider which possible hair accessories or hair flowers you need before you get your hair done.

Lastly, if you’re having your hair done, do not wash your hair for 24-48 hours beforehand. If you want to enjoy your time here and swim, check with your hair care professional, but generally it is not recommended to swim at the beach or pool the day of your wedding, even if you do not wash your hair afterwards.
